Very disappointing

The new edition of this book fails to deliver in every aspect. I’ve used Lonely Planet books in the past, and they’ve proved to be reliable and useful, but not this one. I live in Banff, and so the observations are from this region.

Firstly, the “new” edition is terribly out of date. I purchased it after seeing the publication date was October 2002. It’s accepted and understandable that things change, but there is information that was wrong well over a year before the publication date. A hostel that burnt down in 2000 (Hilda Creek, page 701), and reference to Banff and Jasper as “townsites” (Banff was incorporated in 1991, Jasper in 2001) are examples.

The description of Banff is laughable. There is no possible way anyone could describe the town as a “small, alpine-style village that consists of essentially one main street” (page 686), as this book does. The following history section doesn’t get better: “The Bow River forms a class-distinctive boundary that is still evident today.” In the first instance, the side of the river that LP tells us “caters to the wealthy crowd” comprises mainly of subsidized housing. And “Many people complain that the townsite is too crowded and argue that more hotels and streets should be built.” Aside from the fact a 12 year old could have written the sentence, it’s just simply not correct. In an effort to include an environmental slant, the authors have touched on current issues. Readers are informed that a convention center at Lake Louise is controversial because it’s “in grizzly bear habitat-good goin’ guys” (page 696). Bad goin’ I say-it’s controversial due to water issues, not bears.

The book is riddled with inaccuacies. Not information that is out of date, but straightforward mistakes. Page 688 talks of canoe rentals at Banff’s Central Park. There has never been a canoe rental place here. How could a trained writer even imagine there was? Golden is “just outside the park” (page 692) No, it’s over an hour’s drive away along a treacherous road. There are literally dozens of similar mistakes in just the few pages on Banff. This is also reflected in the maps: Banff has no “Mamoth St.” (page 687). As all Banff streets are named for animals, I guess they meant “mammoth” street, but there is no street of this name either. The mapmakers can’t even correctly spell an incorrect name, or something along those lines anyway.

Most surprising for me, the good, solid travel information these books were once renowned for has been replaced by useless, fluffy text that serves no purpose at all. For example, the restaurants listed are not recommendations as such, but simply listings. And where there is a description it does little to inform. Four lines are used to explain the source of the name of an Irish pub (page 694) that has absolutely no relevance to Banff or the mountains, including that the original Guinness Brewery is still open and that it was “founded by 34 year old Arthur Guinness in 1759.” The next listing is for Bruno’s, named for one of Banff’s most famous and respected mountain men. This name isn’t explained, just that the restaurant has a “wide-ranging menu.” There is an excellent reason why renting a vehicle in Banff, as opposed to Calgary or Canmore, is a bad choice (no unlimited mileage is offered, even by the majors), yet, this important and useful information isn’t included (page 696).

My original purpose of buying this book was for travel around my own country, not so much to rely on every word in print but to get a feeling as how Canada is portrayed by these books. The litany of inaccuracies and uselessness seems to continue beyond the Rockies section. On page 34 readers are told brown bears are “actually a black bear but brown in color.” I just wish I could ask the author how he came up with this unique theory.

I imagine picking a Lonely Planet book as the guide of choice is habit more than anything for many travelers. It’s reflected in the attitude of those I meet on the road and the reviews I see here at Amazon. It seems somehow ironic that Lonely Planet has evolved from the likes of an Africa book I relied on for every word in the 80s, written by a guy whose biography had him living in a hut brewing mango wine somewhere I can’t recall, to this worthless tome that relies on name rather than content to generate sales.

A Waste of Money

This book is a lot of things, and none of them good. The authors really don’t know the country very well, or have failed to visit many of the palces they recommend. I buy a guidebook to learn what’s good and what’s not. But this book doesn’t give that. It just lists the same information anyone can find on the internet or in tourist brochures. I want to know if the rooms are big, if they’re clean, where they are in relation to local attractions. None of this information is given.

I used this book to seach out a hotel near Vancouver Airport, which was my arrival point in Canada. The text says that the Holiday Inn is “beside Highway 99.”, with no indication where along this 30 mile long road it is.

When the author does add a description, it does nothing to inform. Or it’s incorrect. My travels took me to Lake Louise. There are lots of good hiking guides to this region, but I figured the outlines in this book would get me going. I hiked 2 trails the author suggested. The descriptions of both were so wildly inaccurate as to be dangerous. The author thinks there is a teahouse at Mirror Lake (never, I was told). He or she highly recommends hiking the “popular” trail between Moraine Lake and Lake Louise when in fact one doesn’t even exist!

The Lonely Planet description of Mt. Assiniboine Park sounded good, so I followed their lead which said “a gravel road takes you close to the park through the ski resort of Sunshine Village.” I followed my map to Sunshine Village to be told the gravel road has never ever been open to the public.

The only redeeming feature of this book is that when the author hasn’t bothered to visit a place, he or she admits it in a subtle way: In Lake Louise, the extent of recommendations for places to dine is “Eat at your hotel.” (lots of great places here for all budgets including the best bakery I found in a month on the road). In Nelson readers are encouraged to “ask at the visitor center” for somewhere to stay. These type of entries make me doubt whether they even bothered to travel to many places they write about, let alone do any actual research.

This book has turned me off a guidebook series I have used for years. Never again.

Almost perfect

I used the lonely planet Canada for travelling from the West Coast to the East Coast. In most places I found that it gave me all the information that I needed on hostels and places to eat.

The section on the Canadain Rockies was not so good, and an extra guide book is recommened.

On the negative side of this book is that some of the maps are incorrect and I found myself walking the wrong way.

I don’t have anything to compare the book to, but it did the job for me.

Not bad for what it is.

This biography by Crain is an unauthorized one, because of this there are a lot of details left out, it’s still a worthy read for the hardcore Dimebag enthusiast. Much of the books content is taken from magazines, interviews, and the few friends of Dime who were willing to share their experiences. Nobody from the Abbot/Pantera camp makes any statements in the book, outside of quotes taken from different interviews. Due to this approach there are a lot of details left out, however most of the core details are intact. The book feels to at times skate over periods where there is little documentation of Dime or Pantera’s history. It also feels as though it’s content is stretched extremely thin at times. The author constantly reminds the reader how great a guitarist Dime was, or how much he liked to drink and party. While both of these statements are true, it feels as though the book reverts back to these reminders for the sole purpose of filling a few more pages. While the book does have many flaws, one must remember that it is an unauthorized biography, and with what Crain had to work with he did a fairly decent job. For a hardcore Dime or Pantera fan, it is definitely worth reading, however you will not get the full story from this, just an in depth overview.

A Metal Historians Perspective

This book is a great synopsis of the life of Dimebag and it really shows who he was as a person ans as a guitar god. Crain gives many insightful facts beginning with Dime and Vinnie’s childhood and goes till the tragic and unwarranted death of Dimebag Darrell Abbott. I would highly reccomend this to any metal fan or anyone just interested about who Dimebag was and how he will always be remembered.

Well worth reading

In his first book and the first unauthorized biography of metal rocker, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, author Zac Crain provides us a fast, yet detailed account of the life and death of the larger-than-life musician. It is an easy read because it is a joy to read.

An accomplished writer about the music scene, Crain knows the lingo and understands what is important to his readers, those devoted to “Dimebag,” his band Pantera and the final iteration of that band, Damageplan. Fans who clamor for information on Abbott the man, his character, musical influences (though, of course devotees know about his affinity for KISS and Van Halen) and his associations with other musicians will find a wealth of information in these pages. Crain has talked with former band members and those in the media, such as Juliya Chernetsky, host of the FUSE network’s metal show to provide a full picture of “Dimebag” the generous guy, the partier, the musician.

Black Tooth Grin, named after the whisky and cola shot drink “Dimebag” loved to down, and pour for others, gives the reader a thoughtful look at Abbott’s beginnings in Arlington, Texas, a suburb of Dallas and his development as a skilled guitarist with an instantly recognizable sound to his morphing into a business person of sorts. Crain never merely chronicles “Dimebag’s” life and career.

Perhaps more importantly and impressively, Crain draws conclusions and suggests causes and effects but never at the expense of the facts. In other words, Crain does not marshal or manipulate mention of incidents in Abbott’s life to support his own theories of the whats and whys of “Dimebag’s” success, failure, even of his murder. That is exactly what we want in a biographer. As Crain writes, “No one can predict the butterfly effect of the countless–and usually innocuous–coin flips that happen every second of every day.” But Crain’s volume is not fluffy. In the pages following that observation, he details the circumstances that caused Atco Records scout Mark Ross, stuck in Texas when Hurricane Hugo struck North Carolina, to check out the band.

Crain continues the story by explaining that a self-conscious Pantera gives what band members consider a constrained performance in the presence of Ross and think they’ve blown it. As they see him walk out the door, (as it turns out, only to return from a visit to his car and a phone call confirming his intent to sign the group), they kick into high gear and play with their signature abandon. This kind of fully fleshed out information makes the book a compelling read.

Black Tooth Grin tells the story of a man whose end we know. But Crain frames the story nicely by beginning with references to that ending. When, in the chapter titled “Slaughtered” Crain recounts the murder in detail, it is the most illuminating description of the tragedy that ended Abbott’s life that has been written. On December 9, 2004, MTV.com published a story about the murder. At the time, the available sources were the 911 call transcripts and the words of eyewitnesses. The article references “amateur video footage” that investigators have yet to study. For his 2009 book, Crain studied the “video of the incident, unwittingly captured by the band’s own camera” and poured through hundreds of eyewitness accounts. His account is thoughtful, thorough and chilling.

Black Tooth Grin: The High Life, Good Times and Tragic End of “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott by Zac Crain, 2009 Da Capo Press is a must read for metal fans.

Packed full of good stuff

This is a great little book. Part historical overview, part travel guide, it’s written in the breezy, easy-going style of Vance’s columns in The Register, the best of the online IT rags (except that the book has been carefully proofread, unlike a typical Register story). In less than 250 pages Vance has covered almost all of the important historic events and personalities behind Silicon Valley, and provided a great set of tips of places for visiting, dining and drinking. There’s even a good list of books and web sites for further reading.

I’ve lived in the Valley for nearly 15 years, and yet learned a fair amount from this book, including several places to visit that were new to me. There were only a few curious omissions: e.g., Halted gets a mention, but Fry’s does not; neither does Buck’s in Woodside; and surely Frank Drake should be mentioned in the section on the SETI Institute? – but otherwise the text is remarkably accurate, despite having condensed many complex histories, each worthy of a book in its own right, into paragraphs or pages. Vance clearly did his homework. My only historical quibble is with his description of the demise of SGI. I thought it was mainly done in by cheap graphics chips from Nvidia and the like; Itanic was just the icing on the cake.

The book mentions his web site and claims additional information can be found there, but so far there isn’t anything new. Hopefully that will change over time. Another concern is that quite a bit of the information in the book will date fast; I hope Vance and his publisher refreshes the text (or the website, or both) regularly.

If you live in the Valley, visit the Valley, or you just want to know what the heck the place is about, this book is for you. And if you’re a geek too, it’s a must-read.

Great read

I’m a long-time reader of Vance’s articles in the Reg and eslewhere. His articles are always well researched (except when intentionally not!), but it’s his biting wit that always brings out the deeply burried tech geek in me. I was hoping for more of the same from this book, and was pleasantly surprised at how much more it offered than I’d hoped. The book is part biography- focusing on the heroes of the tech revolution, part history, and part guide-book. It may just inspire a trip to Silicon Valley. I even enjoyed it enough to recommend it to my 100% non-tech geek mom (who happens to like Silicon Valley).

Money’s worth

I’ve lived in Palo ALto for years and still learned a ton from this book. It’s the perfect blend of history, context, entertaining anecdotes and insight. Vance manages to describe many “geek” innovations in layman terms, so that the book was especially helpful for a non-geek like me–someone who knew it was past time to learn about his hometown as well as the most important revolution of the 20th century. Who would have thought something so good for me would have caused me to laugh out loud at several points? Just wait until you read about Google’s party plane.

Meh–reads like mostly researched on internet

I just got back from a trip to various parts of Victoria, and four days in Melbourne, and I have to say that using this as my exclusive guidebook was a big mistake. If it were not for the Internet, I most likely would have missed out on lots of interesting stuff.

The complaints:

(1) The map of Melbourne covers way too small an area of the city.

(2) There are way to many places in the State of Victoria, including major towns, that are given short shrift, if they are mentioned at all. If you are going to do a guidebook that focuses on one Australian state, IMHO you should have an entry for each town of note (lets say, over 2000 population), but there are many glaring omissions in this book.

(3) Many of the reviews seem superficial, at best. In fact, they seem so superficial and divorced from reality that it seems like the authors just hit Google to see what was what in a given town and cut and paste that into the relevant sections, with certain modifications for the style of LP books.

To be fair, there has been a rather severe and hideous departure from a previous high level of quality for all LP books in recent years, and it seems like the editors have been pushing the authors to cut costs around the board by simply doing internet research instead of actually visiting places for each new edition–it really shows and the new owners of LP (the BBC) should be ashamed of themselves, but it seems that ever since the company was sold to the BBC in 2007 (or 75% of it, anyway), this has been the trend for all of their publications.

After traveling with this book, I would consider it little more (and in many cases, a lot less) than being a conveniently printed and bound compendium of information I could have compiled using Google at home.

One word of advice–do not even read the “Places to stay” section unless you want hostel type accommodation. The “Places To Stay” section is a total joke, worse than a joke–it leaves out the best places to stay almost anywhere. Tripadvisor.com is a much better source of information (and crowd-sourced information, at that) than the LP has been for a good long time.

This will probably be the last LP guidebook I ever buy–it has become a total scam.

Another highly useful book from Rick Steves

Although Rick Steves’s Italy book provides much valuable information on Florence, the Florence book adds more detail, especially the specific tours of various sightseeing destinations. Also, the book provides black and white photos of the highlights of the destinations that are being featured. This is another very useful travel book from Rick and it has been vital in the planning of my 2012 trip to Italy.

Wishing for more”Tuscan Hill Towns”

As another reviewer notes Rick Steve covers Florence well in his Italy book, but he covers it better in this one. However, his depth of coverage is perhaps to the exclusion of smaller Tuscan hill towns. While he also covers Siena, Pisa, and Luca (in addition to Florence) in Florence and Tuscany 2012, he only covers six hill towns and in limited detail at most. I am forced to gather information about the myriad of other hill towns from a different source. Perhaps in the next edition Rick?

Not up to Lonely Planet’s usual standard

After having tried a few other guidebook series, I am back to Lonely Planet, as these are simply standard-setting in terms of travellers’ reference.

But this is the exception that confirms the rule (along with Lonely Planet Iceland & Faroes). Though published last year, so much of the basic information is not up-to-date – and several recommendations seem like an absolute mystery as they in no way live up to Lonely Planet’s usual criteria.

Just too many times I found myself planning according to the book’s information and recommendations, and ended up finding nothing or not finding the expected. The examples are too many to be ust coincidence and ‘because things change’. I will therefore get rid of this one, and try Footprint or The Rough Guide next time I go to Portugal.

Yet, my critical rating of this guidebook should also be seen in the light of my high expectations, as Lonely Planet – mostly – does set the standard. Try again – new edition.

Better than some

We found this to be a more helpful guide than some other more expensive offerings. It is laid out clearly and logically. It’s easy prose keeps you reading and sometimes opens up a new unconsidered possibility for exploration. It is a packable size and handy for experienced travelers and novices.

The Only guide to Portugal you need

Just back from a week-long trip to Portugal (which included several regions as well as Lisbon), I strongly recommend this guide!

Having had the chance to review (and use) several other guides on Portugal, including Fodor’sFodor’s Portugal, 8th Edition (Fodor’s Gold Guides), Frommer’sFrommer’s Portugal (Frommer’s Complete), EyewitnessPortugal (Eyewitness Travel Guides), I can assuredly say that this was the most informative, comprehensive, practical and well-balanced guide of the bunch.

Yes, it does not give you the most wonderful glossy pictures that Eyewitness provides, and perhaps the description of restaurants and hotels may not be as expansive (though they are solid) as Frommer’s, but Lonely Planet achieves the type of balance between facts, background, recommendations and maps that none of the other guides do.

Pair this with Lonely Planet’s Portuguese Phrasebook Portuguese: Lonely Planet Phrasebook and you’ll be all set to travel.
