5right on target
By GirlyGirl
I have yet to even finish this 1000 page book, but know already that its going to be invaluable for my Mediterranean cruise in October. It does exactly what I need; tells you how to get to the places you want to see in the fastest and most efficient way possible, offers invaluable insight into the idiosyncrasies of each port destination, and of the cruise ship experience in general, and provides very practical guidance all around. This is going to be my cruise ship “bible,” without a doubt, I will be carrying this little thing with me wherever I go. This book is targeted at the adventure travelers who want to make the most of every port city. Rick Steves offers invaluable advice as to which excursions are worth paying for and which are a run fro your money. If you’re going on a cruise to the Med, this is the best book there is. Thank goodness someone finally wrote a practical book that is worth the money. I’ve seen what else is out there–why waste $20 plus for a book of color photos of sights you’re going to see in person? Why waste $20 on a book that mostly gives you a history lesson? I can get that on the internet for free. This book does for me what I can’t do; provides all the inside advice for each port that only a seasoned traveler would know, that will streamline, simplify, and enhance my own experience!

5Buy this book – it pays for itself!
By Emra
I am a huge fan of Rick Steves’ books. My husband and I enjoy cruising and will try to arrive a few days before we leave in order to explore the town of embarkation on our own. We’ve used Rick’s books for independent touring of London, Barcelona, Rome and Naples and found them to be perfect for our needs. This year we had a 14 day Mediterranean cruise planned for October – I bought this book and it was just what we needed to plan port days on our own in several of the cities we visited. Previously we almost always took a shore excursion. While pricey, we’ve lucked out with very good tour guides. However we also wanted to go out on our own – to do that backdoor traveling Rick encourages. With Rick’s new book we toured Venice (his vaporetto tour of the Grand Canal is excellent), Corfu, Mykonos, Split and Dubrovnik on our own – and we enjoyed every moment! Even if this book results in you buying one less shore excursion, it will have paid for itself. The book is terrific – only one of our ports was not covered (Messina Sicily) but we had already planned on taking one of the ship’s shore excursions for that port. Buy this book without hesitation – his recommendations are spot on too when it comes to restaurants, best gelato in town, locations of public WC’s, and my particular favorite – his walking tours.

5Must have for cruisers
By Jeanette Swindell
This guide is a must-have for anyone planning to cruise the Mediterranean. Rick Steves knows of what he writes and shares all sorts of wonderful tips (including money-savers) for all cruisers, experienced or not. He writes about each port and shares the best sites, do-it-yourself tours, local transportation options, and all sorts of valuable information. The guide helps one choose the best use of one’s time on shore and much more… from packing for a cruise, to on-board dos and don’ts. Plus, there are plenty of useful and detailed maps throughout the guide. Although Rick says to tear up the guide and take only what you’ll need, I couldn’t do that. I’ll be taking the entire book.
